I have pursued flatness over depth in most of my work up to this point. Spatial relations cannot always immediately be understood in two-dimensional space. This obfuscation of scale and depth has been an important element in my work, as it underlines the visual abstraction I am pursuing. Yet I have always been interested in stereoscopy, wondering how it can be used to achieve a confusion of spatial perception within 3D space. III=III is an experiment, a first attempt at creating impossible spaces that aim to disrupt traditional notions of three-dimensionality.

Shot entirely from an apartment on the 36th floor of a high-rise building, the images in this experimental animated documentary survey large parts of Hong Kong’s cityscape, drawing attention to the individual lives hidden inside its buildings - together alone, collectively sequestered. Initially recorded in 2020 and completed in 2023 with the advantage of critical distance, TWENTYTИƎWT / 二〇二〇 attempts to encapsulate the darkness, confinement, and uncertainty of the year 2020.
Taking inspiration from 20th-century avant-garde experiments in graphical sound generation, the entire image in O/S functions as an optical soundtrack. Abstract motion becomes sound. What you hear is what you see.
In this stereoscopic installation two-dimensional abstract animation is turned into immersive images with strong three-dimensional depth. Utilising a two-screen, semi-Cave Automatic Virtual Environment, Vœrtex creates a unique experience for the viewer, a hybrid space situated halfway between immersion-in-abstraction and the real world of the gallery space.
